Poverty and Homelessness Action Week runs from January 25th to February 2nd 2014 and with statistics suggesting that one in three of us are potentially only one pay day away from homelessness, it’s an issue that affects more of us than we think. This Poverty and Homelessness Week, local charity Action Homeless are asking Leicester residents to consider how they can prevent themselves, and others, from becoming homeless.
With many people struggling to make ends meet, particularly after Christmas, Action Homeless is asking people to consider getting advice before they reach crisis point. Throughout Leicester and Leicestershire there is a range of support available and Action Homeless are urging Leicester residents to take advantage of these before it’s too late. Last year saw the launch of various initiatives to help people who are at risk of or new to homelessness.
Moneywise, a partnership project funded by the Big Lottery was set up to ensure that tenants have access to good quality advice and support when it comes to managing money. Jessica Donaghy, Financial Advice and Support Officer at Action Homeless said ‘Many people become homeless because they have run into financial trouble. The Moneywise project aims to stop this from happening by providing support sessions where people can get advice and help on how to better manage their money. I’d urge anyone who needs help to get in touch today.’
Another project in Leicester is helping to prevent homelessness by ensuring that people who are new to the streets don’t spend more than one night out in the cold. No Second Night Out Leicester launched in late 2013 and is led by Action Homeless. No Second Night Out Leicester provides opportunities for the general public to help in tackling homelessness locally.
If members of the public are worried about someone they have sleeping rough they can help by getting in touch with Streetlink and sharing their location. Streetlink, a national organisation, will then pass on the information to the Leicester’s Outreach Team who can approach rough sleepers directly to offer support. Streetlink can be contacted on 0300 5000914, at http://www.streetlink.org.uk or via their app.
Mark Grant, Action Homeless CEO says ‘There are a lot of people out there who are at risk of homelessness. Some people may already be receiving help and advice, but there are others who may be unaware of how easy it is to find yourself at crisis point. There are many ways in which people find themselves homeless but it can be as simple as a missed rent payment or a relationship breakdown, we want people to be aware of the help available so that these common issues do not result in homelessness.’
